The Boma Hotel is looking for a responsible and organized Steward to join our staff canteen team. The Steward will be responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of the staff canteen, assisting with food preparation, and ensuring that the canteen environment is welcoming and well-stocked for all hotel staff. This role requires a focus on hygiene, teamwork, and attention to detail.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Cleaning and Sanitation:

    • Maintain the cleanliness of the staff canteen, including floors, tables, chairs, and serving areas.
    • Ensure all utensils, dishes, and kitchen equipment are cleaned, sanitized, and stored properly.
    • Follow health and safety regulations, ensuring that the canteen meets hygiene standards.
  2. Food Preparation Assistance:

    • Assist the kitchen team in preparing and portioning meals for the staff as needed.
    • Help with basic food preparation, such as chopping vegetables, organizing ingredients, and restocking serving stations.
    • Ensure that food is properly presented and available for staff during meal hours.
  3. Inventory and Stock Management:

    • Monitor stock levels for cutlery, dishes, and food supplies, and restock items as required.
    • Inform the Canteen Supervisor of any shortages or needs for reordering to maintain seamless service.
    • Minimize waste by following portion control guidelines and storing food properly.
  4. Customer Service:

    • Interact with staff in a friendly and professional manner, addressing any inquiries or special requests as appropriate.
    • Ensure a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere in the canteen for all hotel staff members.
  5. Equipment and Maintenance:

    • Operate and maintain dishwashing machines, kitchen appliances, and cleaning equipment as needed.
    • Report any broken or malfunctioning equipment to the supervisor for prompt repair.
    • Ensure compliance with hotel safety standards in the use and maintenance of equipment.
  6. Support Team Collaboration:

    • Work closely with the canteen and kitchen team to ensure efficient service during peak hours.
    • Assist with meal setup and breakdown, helping with all necessary tasks to support smooth operations.
    • Participate in team meetings and training to maintain and improve canteen service quality.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Certificate or diploma in hospitality in food and beverage, hospitality or related.
  • Previous experience in a steward, kitchen assistant, or similar role preferred.
  • Knowledge of food safety, hygiene, and sanitation practices.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, handle multiple tasks, and stand for long periods.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills with a customer-focused approach.
  • Flexibility to work shifts, including weekends and holidays.
