Maternity in-charge
Description
Planning, organizing and coordinating all activities in the Maternity services to ensure high standard of nursing care in line with the hospital’s policies and procedures.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Clinical Leadership & Patient Care
- Deliver professional and high-standard nursing care within maternity by overseeing antenatal checkups, labor monitoring, deliveries, postpartum care, and newborn assessments.
- Monitor the quality of care provided to mothers and newborns by ensuring strict adherence to clinical protocols, infection prevention guidelines, and respectful maternity care.
- Evaluate and ensure that all nursing care plans are scientific, evidence-based, and address the priority needs of each patient.
- Conduct routine patient rounds and support the early identification of high-risk cases and timely escalation.
- Ensure proper, timely, and confidential documentation, including handovers between shifts in maternity and other wards where maternity nurses may be deployed.
Staff Management & Development
- Lead, supervise, and mentor a team of midwives, nurses, and healthcare assistants in achieving individual and team care delivery targets.
- Review and approve monthly work schedules (ROTA) to ensure optimal staffing and compliance with institutional policy.
- Ensure that departmental staff are well-oriented and familiar with SOPs, guidelines, and emergency protocols.
- Identify training needs and coordinate continuous professional development of staff in the maternity unit.
Quality Assurance, Safety & Client Satisfaction
- Monitor and evaluate client satisfaction within maternity and proactively manage any complaints raised.
- Participate in and implement departmental quality improvement initiatives and infection prevention protocols.
- Ensure that departmental activities align with the hospital’s quality and growth objectives.
- Participate in the development and implementation of policies, SOPs, and care pathways relevant to maternity services.
- Support perinatal and maternal morbidity/mortality audits and implement resulting action points.
Operational & Resource Management
- Monitor, maintain, and oversee inventory of all medical and non-medical assets within the maternity wing.
- Ensure proper utilization of resources and minimize wastage while maintaining high standards of care.
- Ensure that maternity care is coordinated with other departments, including pediatrics, laboratory, pharmacy, radiology, and theatres, for efficient and timely service delivery.
Communication & Collaboration
- Maintain open and respectful communication with patients, families, and staff.
- Liaise with obstetricians, pediatricians, anesthetists, and other departments as needed.
- Participate in departmental meetings, hospital committees, and quality improvement initiatives.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS/ QUALIFICATIONS
- Diploma in Kenya registered community Health Nurse/ Midwife (KRCHN/M) from a recognized institution.
- Bachelor’s degree in Midwifery will be an added advantage.
- A valid Nursing council license
- Updated BLS, ACLS & EMONC training certifications are mandatory.
- Minimum 5 Years Nursing Experience, At least 2 years’ experience in Maternity Unit and 1 year in supervisory role.
