The Head of Legal & Compliance at Itisha Kenya is a senior leadership role critical to the company’s success as it scales operations across Kenya and other African markets. This individual will serve as the chief legal advisor and compliance strategist, ensuring that the company’s fintech and logistics services operate within the bounds of regulatory requirements and industry best practices.
As a member of the C-Suite and reporting to the CEO, the person will work closely with the board of directors and other senior executives to align legal and compliance efforts with the company’s strategic objectives. The role requires a forward-thinking professional who can navigate complex regulatory environments, provide actionable insights, and mitigate legal risks while fostering an ethical corporate culture.
The successful candidate will oversee the creation and implementation of robust legal frameworks, compliance programs, and governance policies, ensuring that all employees and stakeholders understand and adhere to necessary regulatory standards. Additionally, they will lead Itisha Kenya’s legal team in drafting and negotiating critical contracts, managing disputes, and engaging with regulatory bodies across the regions where the company operates.
Given Itisha Group’s rapid growth and regional expansion, the Head of Legal & Compliance will play a pivotal role in supporting new market entries, establishing strong relationships with regulators, and adapting the company’s operations to meet diverse legal and compliance requirements across Africa. The ideal candidate must possess deep knowledge of fintech and logistics regulations, both in Kenya and other African markets, and demonstrate a proven track record of leadership in similar roles.

Qualifications & Skills
- Education: A Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from a recognized institution; a master’s degree in Law, MBA & professional certifications (e.g., Certified Compliance & Ethics Professional (CCEP), Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP)) an added advantage.
- Legal Practice: Admission as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya and current membership with the Law Society of Kenya (LSK).
- Work experience: A minimum of 10 years of post-qualification legal and compliance experience, with at least 5 years in senior management roles, preferably in the fintech or logistics sectors.
- Strategic thinking & problem-solving: Strong strategic skills to assess legal and compliance risks and develop actionable strategies to mitigate them. Should also be able to align legal strategies with the company’s overarching goals and market expansion plans.
- Leadership and Team Management: Strong leadership skills with experience in managing and mentoring legal and compliance teams. Be able to build collaborative relationships across departments and with external stakeholders.
- Contract and Negotiation Expertise: Proven expertise in drafting, reviewing, and negotiating complex contracts and agreements. Be adept also at protecting the company’s interests while fostering productive partnerships.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present complex legal issues in a clear and concise manner to diverse audiences. With strong interpersonal skills, you should be able to seamlessly work with cross-functional teams and external partners. Should be highly skilled at stakeholder engagement, including board members, regulators, and partners.
- Technology and Data Privacy Proficiency: Knowledge of data protection laws (e.g., GDPR, Kenya’s Data Protection Act etc.) and technology trends in fintech. Familiarity with legal tech tools for contract management, compliance monitoring, and reporting.
- Attention to Detail: High level of precision in drafting legal documents, evaluating compliance processes, and managing risk assessments.
- Analytical and data-driven mindset: Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex data sets and translate them into actionable strategies. Equally be highly proficient in measuring and optimizing performance using data and KPIs.
- Crisis Management and Adaptability: Strong decision-making abilities under pressure, especially when dealing with litigation, regulatory investigations, or market entry challenges. Equally be adaptable to the dynamic and fast-paced environment of a tech-driven startup company that we are.
