Clerk of Works
Description
The Clerk of Works will be responsible for monitoring the works of the contractors and sub-contractors. His/her responsibility will be to ensure that the work is carried out as per the set standards.
They will be expected to work with the foremen, architect and engineering team. This role report to the Director of Operations.
Key responsibilities include
- Conduct a thorough study of the drawings and specifications to check for errors and discrepancies and report to the Architect and Supervisor;
- Carry out a thorough inspection of materials and workmanship and detect those that do not conform to the contract standards;
- Ensure that proper setting out has been done in relation to agreed and correct datum points;
- Ensure that Health and Safety regulations are observed on site. e.g., adequate and clean site toilets, bathrooms, safe & clean drinking water, dust masks for those handling cement, chutes for dropping down debris from heights, site cleanliness, barrier tapes to define around excavated areas, warning signs, safety belts for those working at great heights, Safety gear for workers etc.;
- Witness tests required by the Contract;
- Inform the Lead Consultant/Architect and/or the supervisor of non-conforming works;
- Inform the Lead Consultant/Architect and/or supervisor of problems arising and decision required;
- Confirm oral directions to contractor in writing with a copy to Lead Consultant/ Architect and/or supervisor;
- Ensure that the Contractor fully understands the drawings;
- Carry out detailed reporting and recording through keeping the Consultants and Organization fully informed on a regular basis. This includes informing the lead consultant on decisions required and recording very accurate records on measurements of works to be covered etc.;
- Keep a record of the following: -
- Labor force on site;
- Weather conditions;
- Plant and machinery on site;
- Visitors to site;
- Drawings received;
- Deliveries of materials;
- Instructions issued;
- Inspections by consultants; and,
- Details of significant events.
- Recording actual progress against the approved works programmed;
- Issue site instructions concerning the standard of workmanship but not on any financial implications or those that would modify the design; and,
- Contributing to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
- Other task that may be assigned by Director of Operations.

Education & Experience
- Degree/Higher Diploma in Building/Construction and/or Civil Engineering from a recognized university/National Polytechnic
- At least 2 years’ experience in employment in project oversight
- Knowledge of building and constructions
- Well versed in ICT both as a working and reporting tool
- Self-driven and proven ability to work smart and to meet deadlines without supervision
- Ability to supervise staff and knowledge of sourcing/procurement processes
- High degree of personal integrity
- A valid clean driving license an added advantage
