Our client, a reputable healthcare service provider, is seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Accountant with proven experience in the healthcare industry. The ideal candidate will understand the unique accounting aspects of healthcare operations, including patient billing, insurance reconciliations, medical claims management, and regulatory compliance.
Job Summary
The Accountant will be responsible for managing financial records, preparing reports, handling revenue cycle management, and ensuring compliance with healthcare-specific financial regulations. The role requires close collaboration with clinical and administrative teams to support accurate billing, cost tracking, and financial decision-making.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Management & Reporting
Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records, including general ledger, accounts payable, and accounts receivable.
Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements (income statements, balance sheets, cash flow statements).
Assist in budget preparation, forecasting, and variance analysis specific to healthcare operations.
Monitor and report on key financial metrics such as revenue per patient, cost of services, and collection rates.
Healthcare-Specific Accounting
Manage patient billing cycles, including invoicing for consultations, procedures, admissions, and pharmaceuticals.
Reconcile insurance claims, track reimbursements from NHIF, private insurers, and corporate clients.
Follow up on outstanding insurance claims and patient receivables to minimize days sales outstanding (DSO).
Ensure proper accounting for medical supplies, inventory (pharmaceuticals and consumables), and equipment depreciation.
Handle third-party administrator (TPA) reconciliations and capitation payments where applicable.
Compliance & Regulatory Reporting
Ensure compliance with Kenyan tax laws, including VAT on medical services and supplies, withholding tax, and payroll taxes.
Prepare and file statutory returns (VAT, PAYE, NSSF, NHIF deductions) accurately and on time.
Support internal and external audits by providing necessary documentation and reconciliations.
Stay updated on healthcare-specific financial regulations and accounting standards (IFRS as applicable).
Cash & Bank Management
Perform daily and monthly bank reconciliations.
Monitor cash flow, including petty cash management for clinical and administrative units.
Oversee payment cycles for suppliers, including medical equipment vendors and pharmaceutical distributors.
Collaboration & Process Improvement
Work closely with billing clerks, revenue officers, and clinical administrators to streamline revenue collection.
Identify and implement improvements in billing, collections, and financial reporting processes.
Train and support non-finance staff on basic financial policies related to patient payments and insurance claims.
Qualifications & Experience
Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
Professional certification (CPA-K, ACCA, or equivalent) is required.
Minimum of 3–5 years of accounting experience, with at least 2 years in the healthcare industry (hospital, clinic, diagnostic center, or medical laboratory).
Strong understanding of healthcare revenue cycle management, including insurance claims (NHIF, private insurers) and patient billing.
Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage, or ERP systems) and familiarity with healthcare management information systems (HMIS) is a strong advantage.
Advanced Microsoft Excel skills (pivot tables, formulas, financial modeling).
Knowledge of Kenyan tax laws, especially those affecting healthcare services and medical supplies.
Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to handle confidential information.
